The original Sweet Advent pear™ tree is found growing on the Ny/Pa border with long weeping branches laden with large European style pears that begin dropping in November….a few weeks after Kieffer. This late season dropping pear will persist and drop until mid-December. It produces a pick-up bed full of late pears annually. It has never been sprayed and has never exhibited signs of fireblight. This tree will typically begin producing the 2 years after planting depending on soil fertility.

The Sweet Advent pear™ becomes incredibly sweet as the starches turn to sugars in early to mid-November making this late dropping pear highly desirable for deer and bear this tree resides in the middle of bear country. I have witnessed many of broken limbs on this wild tree from the bears, yet the extreme vigor in this tree allows it to bounce back and continue to produce heavy annual crops.

In all my years of observing this tree has never failed to produce fruit even though it is in the very bottom of a creek valley (a very likely spot for a frost pocket). Because It has survived a winter low of -24 °F that would make it cold hardy to zone 4. However, I’m conservatively listing it for zones 5-8.

The Sweet Advent Pear™ is made by using plant tissue from the original tree and attaching it to the new roots. This is essentially giving you an identical tree of the one you see in the picture and description.

STANDARD ROOTSTOCK

Sweet Advent pear™ is grafted to Pyrus Betulifolia. This vigorous, standard-sized seedling rootstock will reach a mature height of 20′-30′. Therefore, it will produce more fruit on the tree and take up less real estate.

This root is adaptable to acidic soils, poor soil conditions, sandy soils, and soil with low fertility. As a result, it will be suitable for more marginal areas that were wooded and are now food plots, reclaimed land, shale mountain soil, dryer uplands, and sandy soils. With that said, this rootstock will perform exceptionally well when planted in appropriate pH and nutrient-rich soils!

You should perform a soil test and make the correct amendments to your soil for optimal growth and fruit production, as low fertility will cause a delay in fruit production. The roots will anchor well, producing a solid and drought-tolerant tree because of the deep “real roots”. We are only grafting onto the most vigorous standard rootstock. This rootstock is suitable for plant zones 4b – 8.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Plant at least 2 different pear varieties within close proximity to each other to ensure pollination. The varieties of grafted pears we have for sale will blossom and overlap each other giving you excellent pollination. The Danville Kieffer pear tree is an excellent pollinator for both Asian and European varieties of pears.

Plant all pear trees in moist, well drained soil with a soil ph between 5.5 – 7.2 with adequate nutrient levels for optimal growth. The above soil conditions will provide the most growth and fruit production. Pears are one fruit tree which will also tolerate acidic soils with poor fertility. A fruit tree requires at least 6 hours of sunlight for fruit production and growth. Space trees 20′ apart and use cages of at least 5’ to protect your trees. This will ensure your deer eat your fruit in a few years and not your trees this year.
